8-Day Cycling Adventure through the Heart of Hainan Rainforest, Hainan Island, Middle Mountain Road Biking Expedition
Embark on an exhilarating cycling journey through the enchanting heart of Hainan Island, covering a distance of 350 kilometers. Explore the majestic Wuzhishan, the island’s highest peak, towering at 1843 meters above sea level. Experience the adrenaline rush of conquering the legendary Atuoling Ridge, featuring a challenging 12-kilometer steep slope. Engage in the prestigious Tour of Hainan Cycling Race, where cyclists compete fiercely for the title of King of the Mountain, a tradition since 2005.
We recommend commencing your adventure in Sanya and concluding in Haikou. Begin with a moderate cycling distance of less than 60 kilometers per day for the initial two days to prepare for the demanding 12-kilometer steep slope on the third day. Follow this with a relaxed 50-kilometer ride on the fourth day and conclude with a 100-kilometer ride on the final day, totaling 5 days of thrilling biking experience.

The Atuoling Ridge climb is a significant but rewarding challenge. The 12km ascent is steady and demanding, similar to a classic mountain pass in professional racing. The first two days (60km and 40km) are designed to help you acclimate. Our support vehicle follows closely, and you can climb at your own pace—the goal is personal accomplishment, not speed. Good general fitness and mental readiness for a sustained effort are the best preparations.
We provide sturdy touring or endurance road bikes with a wider gear range to handle the climbs comfortably. They are well-maintained and equipped for varied terrain. A professional fitting will be done on Day 1 to ensure your bike is adjusted perfectly for you and the journey ahead.
This is a strategic “ramp-up” designed for success. The first two days allow your body to adapt to cycling in Hainan's climate and build confidence on the bike, all while enjoying scenic coastal and foothill routes. This gradual approach ensures you are physically and mentally prepared for the iconic climbs on Days 4 and 6, reducing the risk of fatigue or injury.
The rainforest climate means it can be cool and misty in the mornings at higher elevations, warm during the day, and potentially rainy. Layering is essential. Pack breathable cycling wear, a quality waterproof/windproof jacket, arm/leg warmers, and full-finger gloves for descents. Don't forget high-SPF sunscreen—the sun can be strong even uphill.
Seamlessly. Each morning, your main luggage is loaded onto our support vehicle. It travels directly to the next hotel, waiting for you upon arrival. You ride completely unburdened, carrying only essentials like water, snacks, and a rain layer in your bike bags. This is crucial for tackling the climbs efficiently.
Absolutely. Safety is paramount. Before major descents, our leader will conduct a briefing on technique (braking control, body position) and group spacing. We descend in a controlled, single-file manner. The support vehicle follows at the rear with hazard lights on. Regular regroup points ensure no one is left behind and everyone can cool their brakes.
We prioritize hearty, local cuisine to fuel your adventure. Breakfasts are at the hotels. For lunch, we stop at authentic local restaurants—think flavorful noodle soups, farm-to-table vegetables, and free-range chicken dishes. In remote areas, our support vehicle also carries extra energy snacks and fruits to keep everyone going.
It means experiencing the legendary roads of the Tour of Hainan race with full logistical support, just like the pros. You'll tackle the same climbs (like Atuoling Ridge), enjoy expertly planned routes, and have a support team handling everything off the bike. You focus purely on the ride, the challenge, and the incredible scenery.
Our support vehicle is always nearby. You can ride inside for a section, catch your breath, and then resume cycling when you're ready. Many riders choose to walk their bikes for short stretches—it's perfectly okay. Conquering the climb is a personal achievement, no matter how you do it. We celebrate every effort.
Yes, this is a highlight. The route passes through authentic villages. While we ride respectfully through communities, our bilingual leader will share insights into the local cultures, traditions, and ways of life. Depending on timing, we may make brief stops to appreciate the surroundings and architecture.
The route primarily uses well-maintained provincial roads (like G224) and national roads. The surfaces are generally smooth asphalt, perfect for cycling. Traffic is very light once we leave the main tourist corridors, offering a serene and immersive riding experience.
We employ a “climb at your own pace, regroup at the top” strategy for major ascents. The leader positions themselves in the middle of the group. The support vehicle sweeps at the back. We always regroup at pre-determined points like summits, village entries, or after descents to ensure no one gets lost and everyone can share the experience.
Haikou offers a great blend of history and relaxation. You can explore the historic Qilou Old Street, visit the Volcanic Cluster Geopark, relax by the city's beaches, or enjoy the vibrant local food scene. Our leader will provide a map and personalized recommendations based on your interests.
Signal is generally good in towns and on most main roads. However, in some deep valleys or remote sections of the rainforest, signal can be weak or intermittent. We recommend informing family of the schedule beforehand. Our support vehicle carries a satellite phone for true emergencies.
It's a journey into Hainan's "green lung." Instead of ocean vistas, you're rewarded with mist-shrouded peaks, serene rainforests, the cool air of high altitudes, and a profound sense of quiet achievement. You experience the island's rugged backbone and its vibrant ethnic cultures, offering a completely different, more introspective adventure.
