About this tour

Authentic Hainan: Fishing Village Life & Tropical Botanical Wonders

Journey Essence: Beyond Resorts, Into Real Life

This tour is crafted for curious travelers who yearn to experience Hainan beyond its glossy resorts—to discover the island’s living traditions and natural richness. We take you where real life unfolds: a vibrant floating fishing village and a lush garden of tropical wonders. It’s a day of gentle immersion, authentic flavors, and genuine connection—with people, plants, and the pace of coastal Hainan.

 Two Worlds, One Island

Xincun Fishing Village

Xincun is not a recreated attraction—it’s a living, breathing community where the Dan Jia (“boat dwellers”) people have built their lives on water for generations. Known as the “Venice of Hainan,” the village features over 600 houses perched on stilts above a tranquil harbor, connected by a maze of wooden walkways. Here, daily life revolves around the sea: fishing boats come and go, nets are repaired, and the air carries the scent of salt and adventure.

Xinglong Tropical Botanical Garden

A stark yet beautiful contrast, Xinglong is Hainan’s largest tropical plant sanctuary—a living library of biodiversity. Founded in 1957, this 340,000-square-meter garden is both a research hub and a public paradise, home to more than 1,200 species of tropical and subtropical plants. Walk beneath canopying trees, breathe in the scent of blooming flowers and spices, and discover plants that shape local economies—from coffee and cocoa to precious medicinal herbs.

Cultural & Historical Significance

The Dan Jia culture of Xincun represents one of southern China’s most distinctive maritime traditions. Historically living almost entirely on boats, these communities have gradually settled into stilt-house villages while preserving their deep connection to the sea, unique dialects, and culinary heritage. Visiting Xincun offers a rare window into a vanishing way of life that has sustained itself through tides and time.
Xinglong Botanical Garden tells a different story—one of scientific exploration and agricultural adaptation. Established as part of a state-led effort to study and cultivate tropical crops, the garden symbolizes Hainan’s role as China’s tropical botanical frontier. Many plants here were introduced from Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America, reflecting decades of botanical exchange and research that continue to shape Hainan’s green economy today.
Traveler’s Notes & Tips
  • Footwear & clothing: Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes for walking on potentially wet surfaces in the fishing village. Light, breathable clothing and sun protection (hat, sunscreen) are recommended for the garden.
  • Respectful engagement: Xincun is a real community, not a zoo. Always ask permission before taking photos of residents, and be mindful of privacy.
  • Seafood allergies: Please inform your guide in advance if you have seafood allergies or dietary restrictions for lunch arrangements.
  • Cash & purchases: Some small vendors in the fishing village may not accept digital payments; carrying some cash (RMB) is useful. The botanical garden shop accepts most payment methods.
  • Motion sensitivity: The boat ride in Xincun is generally calm, but if you are prone to seasickness, prepare accordingly.
