Cultural Treasures of Hainan – Fishing Village & Ethnic Minority Immersion
Two Pillars of Hainan’s Culture
Xincun Fishing Village
Xincun is a living cultural landscape where the Dan Jia (“Boat Dwellers”) community continues its ancient symbiotic relationship with the sea. This isn’t a museum replica; it’s a thriving village of over 600 stilted, red-roofed houses set over a sheltered bay. Here, homes, shops, and even temples are built on water, connected by a network of boardwalks. The harbor bustles with fishing boats, floating markets, and the timeless rhythm of tidal life.
Binglanggu Li & Miao Cultural Park
Set within a stunning valley of areca palms, Binglanggu is a living museum and cultural sanctuary dedicated to preserving the heritage of Hainan’s indigenous peoples. Far from a staged show, it features authentic village structures, working artisans, and community elders who share their living traditions. The park offers a holistic immersion into the architecture, crafts, music, and spiritual beliefs of the Li and Miao nationalities.
Cultural & Historical Significance
The Dan Jia people represent a unique maritime culture with origins tracing back to fishing communities along Southern China’s coast. Historically living almost entirely on boats, they were often called “Gypsies of the Sea.” Their gradual transition to stilt-house villages like Xincun marks a significant cultural adaptation, while their dialect, folk songs, and fishing methods preserve ancient traditions facing modern pressures.
The Li and Miao peoples are the original inhabitants of Hainan Island, with the Li having resided here for over 3,000 years. Their rich cultural tapestry includes world-renowned brocade weaving (Li brocade), intricate tattooing traditions (among older generations), distinctive boat-shaped housing, and vibrant musical and dance forms. Binglanggu plays a crucial role in actively safeguarding these intangible cultural heritages, providing a space where traditions are not only displayed but lived and transmitted by the communities themselves.
