Nanwan Peninsula stretches along Hainan’s eastern coast, just a scenic 1.5-hour drive from Sanya. The area is renowned for its authentic fishing village atmosphere and resident monkey population. While called an “island,” this nature reserve is actually connected to the mainland on the Nanwan Peninsula near Xincu.

Nanwan Monkey Island is China’s only nature reserve dedicated to macaque monkeys, established in 1965 to protect the Macaca mulatta species. Today, about 2,000 monkeys roam freely in this protected habitat, offering visitors rare close encounters with these intelligent creatures in their natural environment.
